Moroto is the main town of Moroto district in the Karamoja region of northeastern Uganda, close to the border with Kenya. The land around it is semi-arid plain, and immediately to the east rises Mount Moroto, a large mountain massif that dominates the skyline and shapes the town's setting.
From above, the town forms a modest grid of streets and compounds on the flat ground below the mountain. Roads run out across the plain toward other Karamoja towns, while seasonal watercourses leave faint lines across the landscape. The mountain itself appears as a zone of empty space with only a few tracks climbing its slopes.
