Murree sits on a ridge of the lower Himalayan foothills northeast of Islamabad, more than two thousand metres above sea level. On a map there is no grid at all. Roads twist along the contours and double back as they climb, and buildings cling to slopes that fall steeply into forested valleys.
Murree was founded in the mid-nineteenth century as a sanatorium and summer retreat for British officials, and for a time it served as the summer seat of the Punjab government. Its central promenade, the Mall, still runs along the ridge. It remains one of Pakistan's most visited hill stations, busiest in summer and during winter snowfall.
