Nanauta lies in the Saharanpur district of western Uttar Pradesh, in the flat and fertile country between the Yamuna and the Ganges. From above, the town is compact. A dense centre of close-packed houses and narrow lanes is surrounded by newer streets that spread outward along the main roads.
The land around it is some of the most intensively farmed in India. Fields of sugarcane and wheat stretch to the horizon, crossed by canals, field boundaries and village roads.
