Norderstedt borders Hamburg to the north, in the state of Schleswig-Holstein. It became a city in 1970, when four separate municipalities merged, and the map still shows that origin. Older village centres remain visible within a spread of residential streets, with open land and green corridors between them.
A planned central district, Norderstedt-Mitte, was built to bring the parts together, and it is the terminus of Hamburg's U1 underground line. Hamburg Airport lies just across the city's southern boundary, so the runway area sits right beside the map's edge. Several lakes and parks break up the residential areas.
