Rawang lies in the Gombak district of Selangor, north of Kuala Lumpur, on the main road and rail corridor running up the west side of the peninsula. It began as a tin-mining town, and today it is a fast-growing commuter centre with new housing estates spreading out from the older town core.
On a map the transport lines stand out first. The railway and the main highways run roughly north to south, and the old town sits beside them. Around it, residential developments form neat loops and cul-de-sacs, while patches of green, some of them old mining land and ponds, fill the gaps between neighbourhoods.
