Seen from above, Salem is shaped by water on almost every side. The North River curves along its upper edge, the South River cuts in toward the centre, and the harbour opens eastward past Salem Neck and Winter Island. The street pattern follows that coastline rather than a grid, with older lanes running down toward the waterfront and quieter residential blocks filling the land between the inlets.
The town's maritime past is still legible on the map. Derby Wharf reaches a long, thin line out into the harbour, part of Salem Maritime National Historic Site, which preserves the wharves and buildings of the port that once traded with Asia and the Caribbean.
