São Francisco is in the north of Minas Gerais, on the banks of the river it is named after. The São Francisco is one of Brazil's great rivers, flowing north through the dry interior of Minas and Bahia, and here it is already wide. On the map it forms a broad band of water beside the town, with sandbanks and islands appearing in the channel.
The town grew as a river settlement, a stopping point for boats travelling along the São Francisco, and its older streets are close to the bank. From the riverfront the grid extends inland, becoming more open towards the edges, where the land turns to cerrado and farmland.
The landscape beyond the town is dry for much of the year, so the river and its green margins stand out clearly. A São Francisco map poster shows the relationship that has always defined the town: a compact grid of streets set against the wide, slow curve of one of Brazil's best-known rivers.
