Shājāpur is the headquarters of a district in the Malwa region of Madhya Pradesh. The land here is a broad, fairly level plateau, and the town grew up as a local market and administrative centre for the farms around it. From above, older lanes are packed tightly in the middle, and newer streets spread out along the roads leading out of town.
The town's name is traditionally linked to the Mughal emperor Shah Jahan. Today Shājāpur is better known as a district seat, with government offices, schools and a market serving villages across the surrounding countryside. A small river runs along its edge, and highways connect it to larger cities in Malwa.
