Shenkottai, also written Sengottai, lies in Tenkasi district in the far southwest of Tamil Nadu, right at the foot of the Western Ghats. The plains stop abruptly here. On the map, the town sits where flat farmland meets the steep forested ranges that separate Tamil Nadu from Kerala.
That position has always made Shenkottai a gateway. Roads and a railway line leave the town and climb through the ghats toward Kerala. The line toward Kollam, with its route through the hills, is well known in the region. The town itself is compact, with dense older streets around the centre and a more scattered pattern where it meets fields and irrigation channels.
