Sobinka is in Vladimir Oblast, west of the city of Vladimir, on the Klyazma river. The town grew in the nineteenth century around a textile mill, one of the many that made this part of central Russia an industrial region. The mill district by the river is still the historic heart of the town.
On the map the Klyazma sweeps past Sobinka in wide curves, with flat meadow and woodland along its banks. The streets are a mix of a straight grid of residential blocks and older roads following the river and the former factory grounds. Forest surrounds the town on most sides.
