Tarikere is a town in Chikkamagaluru district, Karnataka, where the open Deccan plains begin to rise toward the forested Western Ghats. From above it forms a compact centre of streets along the main road and railway, with residential areas spreading into the surrounding farmland.
The countryside around it is agricultural, with areca nut and coconut plantations common in this part of Karnataka. To the west the land grows hillier and more wooded. The Bhadra River and its reservoir at Lakkavalli lie within the wider taluk, and the Bhadra tiger reserve extends across the hills beyond.
