Tracy lies in San Joaquin County, on the western edge of California's Central Valley, where flat farmland meets the foot of the Altamont Pass. It began in 1878 as a railroad junction on the Central Pacific line, and the older downtown still follows a compact grid near the tracks. Around it, newer neighbourhoods spread outward in loops and cul-de-sacs.
From above, transport lines frame the city. Interstate 205 runs along its northern side and Interstate 580 passes to the southwest. Beyond them, the California Aqueduct and the Delta-Mendota Canal trace long, smooth lines across the fields. Much of the surrounding land is still orchards and row crops, laid out in the rectangular plots typical of the valley.
A Tracy map poster shows a city that is still growing: an old railroad core, a ring of postwar and recent subdivisions, and the farm grid waiting beyond. The composition is clean and orderly.
