Umarsera is in the Vidarbha region of eastern Maharashtra, on the Deccan plateau. On a map, it appears as an irregular built-up area, with a dense cluster of lanes where the settlement is oldest and newer streets and housing extending outward in less regular patterns along the main roads.
The land around it is mostly level or gently rolling, and Vidarbha is known as an important cotton-growing region. Fields divide the countryside into uneven plots, and tracks and small roads connect the area to nearby villages and towns. Thin streams and drainage channels wind across the terrain.
