Upper Dir is the main town of the Upper Dir district in northern Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, known locally simply as Dir. It lies high in a narrow valley of the Panjkora river system, with mountains rising sharply on both sides. On a map, the town is long and thin, its built area stretched along the stream and the main road that follows it.
That road is the town's backbone. It continues north toward the Lowari Pass and the tunnel beneath it, the main route into Chitral, which gives Dir its role as a gateway and market town for travellers and traders. Bazaars line the main road, while smaller lanes climb the slopes in short, steep turns.
Dir was once the seat of a princely state, ruled by a nawab until it was merged into Pakistan's administrative system in 1969.
