Viana lies in Luanda Province, to the east and south-east of the city centre, and over recent decades it has become one of the most populous parts of the metropolitan area. The map shows a place still taking shape: dense older neighbourhoods near the main roads, and large new districts laid out on land that was open until recently.
The Luanda railway runs east through Viana toward Malanje, and major roads connect the municipality to the capital and to the interior. Planned housing areas such as Zango appear on the map as regular blocks of identical streets, a strong contrast to the more organic patterns of older settlements.
A Viana map poster captures that mix at one moment in time. In black and white the difference between planned grids and informal growth becomes a design of its own, and the result is a portrait of a city that most maps show only as the edge of Luanda.
