Westbrook sits just west of Portland in southern Maine, on the Presumpscot River. From above the river is the organising line of the city. It curves through the centre and past the falls where the mill town began, with the downtown streets clustered on its banks and residential neighbourhoods spreading out on both sides.
Westbrook grew around paper-making. The large mill by the river, long associated with S. D. Warren, shaped the city's economy and its layout for well over a century. On the map, the older, denser grid by the water gives way to looser streets and wooded areas further out, with Portland's suburbs close by to the east.
A Westbrook map poster is anchored by that river: a strong, looping line with bridges crossing it and the old core pressed against its banks. It is a clear, characterful image of a working New England river town.
