Xigang lies in Ningxia on the broad plain around Yinchuan, the regional capital. This is irrigated country, watered for centuries by channels drawn from the Yellow River, which runs further to the east. On a map, the built-up area is a regular grid of wide roads and large blocks, typical of recent urban growth in northern China.
To the west, the Helan Mountains rise abruptly from the plain and form a long, straight barrier against the desert beyond. The flat land between town and mountains is crossed by canals and field boundaries, which give the surrounding map a fine, ordered texture.
