Yelabuga sits on the right bank of the Kama in Tatarstan, where the small Toima river comes down to meet it. From above, the historic centre is a tight, regular grid of merchant streets on a raised terrace. Beyond it the land drops away toward water meadows, backwaters and the broad sweep of the river, which gives the town a strong natural edge on one side.
The town is known well beyond the region. The landscape painter Ivan Shishkin was born here, and his family house is now a museum. The poet Marina Tsvetaeva spent her last days in Yelabuga in 1941. On a bluff above the Kama stands the restored stone tower of an ancient hillfort, known locally as the Devil's Settlement, and it can be seen from the river.
A Yelabuga map poster shows the contrast between the orderly nineteenth-century core and the looser districts built later, with the Kama and its floodplain filling a generous part of the frame. Outside the town lie the large industrial plots of the Alabuga economic zone.
