Yidu Map Poster & Print
Yidu is the historic name for the urban heart of what is now Qingzhou, in central Shandong. On a map it sits where the North China Plain meets the first hills of the Yishan range. Streets to the north run broad and straight over flat land. To the south the terrain begins to fold, and the city's edge follows the slopes.
Qingzhou gave its name to one of the nine ancient provinces described in early Chinese texts, and for centuries this was an important prefectural seat. Its old quarter keeps narrow lanes and traditional courtyard streets. In the 1990s a large cache of Buddhist sculpture was unearthed at the site of the Longxing Temple here, and it is now shown in the city museum.
A Yidu map poster sets the tighter streets of the old town against the wider, newer avenues that surround it. In monochrome, the change in scale is striking: small irregular lanes on one side, long even blocks on the other. The southern hills give the composition a natural boundary.
