Yongbei is the seat of Yongsheng County in northwestern Yunnan, within Lijiang prefecture. The town lies in a basin enclosed by mountains, and on a map it forms a compact grid of streets on the level valley floor, with farmland around it and roads that follow valleys out toward the surrounding highlands.
The region is mountainous and deeply cut by rivers, with the Jinsha, the upper course of the Yangtze, flowing through the wider county. That terrain shapes the road network, which runs along valleys and winds up slopes rather than spreading out evenly.
