Aix-en-Provence began in 122 BC as Aquae Sextiae, a Roman settlement built around warm springs, and the old town still keeps the compact outline of its former walls. On a map that outline is unmistakable. A dense tangle of narrow medieval streets sits inside a continuous ring of boulevards, and newer districts and hillside villas spread out beyond it toward the Provençal countryside.
Along the southern edge of the old town runs the Cours Mirabeau, a broad, straight avenue shaded by plane trees and dotted with fountains. Boulevard ring
