Toulon Map Poster & Print
Toulon lies on the Mediterranean coast of Provence, around one of the deepest and best-protected natural harbours in Europe. It is the main base of the French Navy, and the naval dockyard takes up a large part of the waterfront. In 1793 a young artillery officer named Napoleon Bonaparte made his reputation during the siege of the city.
On a map, the harbour is the main feature: an inner basin and a larger outer bay, partly closed off by the Saint-Mandrier peninsula. Behind the waterfront, the old town is a dense network of narrow streets and small squares. Above the city, Mount Faron rises steeply, so the streets climb and curve as they move north.
