Ashibetsu Map Poster & Print
Ashibetsu lies in the Sorachi area of central Hokkaido, in a valley surrounded by forested hills. From above, the city is long and narrow, following the river and the valley floor. Built-up areas appear in segments along the main road and railway corridor, with wide expanses of forest on either side.
The city grew as a coal-mining centre in the twentieth century, and its layout reflects that history, with settlements that once formed around individual mines. After the mines closed, the population fell considerably, and today the map shows a city with a clear central district and quieter outlying areas along the valley.
The Sorachi River and its tributaries run through the area, drawing soft curves across the map. An Ashibetsu map poster captures this valley city in its landscape: the linear built-up area, the river, and the vast forested hills that make up most of the municipality.
