Deolāli Map Poster & Print
Deolāli lies just south-east of Nashik in Maharashtra and is closely tied to its cantonment. From above, the map divides into two characters. The older town has a denser, irregular network of lanes around the railway and market. The cantonment has broad roads, generous plots, parade grounds and training areas set out in a looser and more deliberate plan.
The military presence goes back a long way. Under British rule, Deolali held a transit camp where soldiers waited, sometimes for months, to sail home. English slang took the phrase "going doolally" from that experience. Today the town is home to the Indian Army's School of Artillery, and much of the open land around it serves military use.
