Dolný Kubín lies in northern Slovakia, in the Orava region, on the banks of the Orava River. From above, the town follows the river valley, with the older centre close to the water, newer housing estates climbing the slopes and bridges connecting the two banks. Wooded hills close in on all sides.
The town is closely associated with the poet Pavol Országh Hviezdoslav, who lived and worked there, and it hosts Hviezdoslavov Kubín, a long-running festival of recitation. Orava Castle, one of the best-known castles in Slovakia, stands a short distance up the valley.
