Friendswood sits on the low, level prairie between Houston and Galveston Bay. From above, it looks like a web of looping residential streets, quiet cul-de-sacs and short collector roads rather than a grid. The main thread through it is Clear Creek, which winds along the town's edge in slow meanders. Its green, tree-lined banks break up the pattern of houses.
The town began in 1895 as a Quaker settlement, which is where the name comes from. It grew into a residential community spread across parts of two counties. It is close to NASA's Johnson Space Center, and for decades many people working in the space program chose to live here. The town's feel is domestic and settled, and the map shows the same thing.
