Hamminkeln lies in the Lower Rhine region near the Dutch border, and from above it does not look like a typical town. It is a group of villages, including Hamminkeln itself, Dingden, Brünen, Mehrhoog and Ringenberg, spread across flat farmland and linked by country roads. Each village has its own small centre, surrounded by fields, hedgerows and patches of woodland.
The small river Issel crosses the area, and a network of drainage ditches and streams adds fine lines to the landscape. In March 1945 the area around Hamminkeln was one of the main landing zones of Operation Varsity, a large Allied airborne operation during the crossing of the Rhine.
