Herten lies in the northern Ruhr, in North Rhine-Westphalia, between Recklinghausen and Gelsenkirchen. For much of the twentieth century it was one of the major coal-mining towns of the region, and its layout still reflects that era: workers' settlements, former colliery sites and rail lines run through a web of residential streets.
Since mining ended, the landscape has been reshaped. The Hoheward spoil heap, shared with Recklinghausen, has become a landscape park with a horizon observatory and sweeping paths, while the former Ewald colliery has been turned into a business and leisure site. Schloss Herten, a moated castle set in a park, adds an older layer.
