Hibbing Map Poster & Print
Hibbing lies on the Mesabi Iron Range in northern Minnesota, and its map is unlike almost any other. Right next to the regular street grid is the Hull-Rust-Mahoning Mine, one of the largest open-pit iron mines in the world. It is a huge, stepped cavity that takes up as much space on the sheet as the city itself.
The mine also explains the town's layout. In the early twentieth century, when ore was found under the original townsite, much of Hibbing was moved south, with buildings rolled on timbers to new ground. The present grid, with its wide streets and orderly blocks, comes from that relocation.
Hibbing is also where Bob Dylan grew up, and the Greyhound bus company started here as a local shuttle for miners. A Hibbing map poster places the city grid beside the pit that shaped it.
