Lohja lies in western Uusimaa, about an hour from Helsinki, on the shores of Lohjanjärvi, one of the larger lakes in southern Finland. The town centre sits near the northern end of the lake, and on the map the water fills much of the frame, with bays, peninsulas and islands creating a complex, irregular shoreline.
A long gravel ridge, the Lohjanharju, runs past the town and carries roads along its crest. The centre has a compact street pattern around the medieval stone church of St. Lawrence, one of the largest of its kind in Finland. Around the centre, residential areas spread into the surrounding forest.
