Marion lies directly north-east of Cedar Rapids in eastern Iowa, and the two cities meet along a shared boundary. It was the original county seat of Linn County until the courthouse moved to Cedar Rapids in the early twentieth century. On a map the historic uptown forms a compact grid of blocks around a central square park.
Railway lines pass close to the uptown area, adding diagonal lines across the grid, and Indian Creek winds through the city with parks and trails along its banks. Beyond the older centre, the city has expanded in all directions, with residential streets arranged in curving layouts typical of later suburban growth.
