Pādegān-e Manjīl lies near the town of Manjil in Gilan Province, in northern Iran. The word pādegān refers to a garrison, and the settlement's layout reflects that origin: a more regular, planned arrangement of streets and blocks than the older towns of the region. That landscape is the valley of the Sefid Rud, which cuts through the Alborz mountains on its way to the Caspian Sea.
