Rock Hill Map Poster & Print
Rock Hill began with the railroad. When the line between Charlotte and Columbia was being built in the mid-nineteenth century, workers had to cut through a small hill of flint rock, which gave the new station its name. On a Rock Hill map poster, the railway still runs through the older part of the city, with the downtown grid set beside it.
Winthrop University lies close to the centre, its green campus a distinct shape among the surrounding streets. The Catawba River forms the eastern side of the area, running in a wide wooded channel, while newer neighbourhoods and commercial roads stretch towards the interstate on the western edge.
The city also has a place in civil rights history: in 1961 a group of students known as the Friendship Nine were arrested at a downtown lunch counter and chose jail rather than bail, a tactic that spread to other protests. Today the city is part of the growing Charlotte region.
