Shelui lies in Iramba district of Singida region, on the central plateau of Tanzania. It sits on the main road running north from Singida, and the town has grown along that route, with the busiest streets lined up beside it and residential plots spreading out on either side. Beyond them, the land opens into farmland and dry bush dotted with the granite outcrops common to the region.
The Singida region is known for its dry climate and for farming, particularly sunflowers, which are grown widely and pressed for oil. Shelui serves as a stopping point and market for travellers and nearby villages, and its layout reflects that role: a practical town centred on the road rather than on any single square or landmark.
