Svitavy Map Poster & Print
Svitavy is a town in the Pardubice Region of the Czech Republic, on the historic border between Bohemia and Moravia. The Svitava river rises nearby and flows south from here towards Brno. The town is best known for its main square, náměstí Míru, a long rectangular space lined with arcaded houses that stretches for several hundred metres through the centre.
Svitavy is also the birthplace of Oskar Schindler, the industrialist who saved more than a thousand Jewish workers during the Second World War. A memorial and an exhibition in the town remember him. Around the historic core, later neighbourhoods and industrial areas spread outward, and ponds and green space lie on the town's edges.
