Świdnica lies in Lower Silesia, in south-western Poland, at the foot of the Sudetes. The old town is one of the most distinct parts of the map: a large market square with a town hall at its centre, surrounded by a close network of streets. A ring of green spaces follows the line of the old fortifications, and the Bystrzyca river passes along the eastern side.
The town is best known for its Church of Peace, a large timber-framed church built in the seventeenth century and listed by UNESCO together with its twin in Jawor. The Gothic cathedral, with one of the tallest church towers in the region, rises above the old town.
