Tenango de Arista is the main town of Tenango del Valle municipality in the State of Mexico, at the southern end of the Toluca Valley. On a map, the town sits at the point where the flat valley floor meets higher ground. The centre has a regular grid of streets and blocks, and the farmland beyond is divided into long, narrow fields.
Directly above the town is Teotenango, a large pre-Hispanic archaeological site on a hilltop, with terraces, platforms and plazas. It is one of the best-known sites in the region. To the west, the land rises toward the Nevado de Toluca volcano, which is visible from much of the valley.
