Uvalde is the seat of Uvalde County in southwest Texas, where the Hill Country meets the brush country further south. On a map the town has a regular grid of streets around a central plaza, with US 90 running east to west and US 83 running north to south through the middle. The Leona River runs along the eastern side, and ranch land stretches out beyond the edges.
The town calls itself the City of Trees, and the shaded streets and river bottoms give it a greener look than much of the surrounding country. Uvalde was the home of John Nance Garner, US vice president in the 1930s, and his former home is now a museum. The town is also home to Southwest Texas Junior College.
