Abbotsford lies in the Fraser Valley of British Columbia, on the south side of the Fraser River and directly against the border with Washington State. On a map the city is a mix of suburban streets and wide agricultural land, crossed from west to east by the Trans-Canada Highway. Low hills, including Sumas Mountain, rise at the eastern edge.
East of the city, the Sumas Prairie lies on the bed of Sumas Lake, which was drained in the 1920s to create farmland. In November 2021 heavy rain flooded much of the prairie, and the old lake briefly reappeared. Abbotsford is also known for its berry farms, especially raspberries, and for its international airshow.
