Abiko is defined by water. The long, narrow Lake Teganuma lies along its southern side, and the Tone River, one of Japan's largest, runs along the north. The town sits on the raised ground between them. On a map it appears as a band of streets squeezed into a strip, with water pressing in from both sides.
The Joban Line runs through the centre and links Abiko to Tokyo, and the densest streets gather around its stations. Away from the tracks the pattern turns into the small, winding lanes of a Japanese suburb, broken by parks, shrines and patches of farmland that run down to the lakeshore. It is a commuter town, but an unhurried one.
In the early twentieth century, writers of the Shirakaba literary group, among them Shiga Naoya and Mushanokoji Saneatsu, lived by the lake, and the potter Bernard Leach worked here for a time. Station-centred streets
Around Abiko and Tennodai stations the grid tightens into a compact commercial core. It then relaxes into curving residential lanes as it spreads toward the lake.
