Ahlen lies in the south-east of the Münsterland, in North Rhine-Westphalia, on the River Werse, which winds through the town in gentle curves. The historic centre forms a compact cluster of streets around St. Bartholomew's church and the market square, surrounded by a ring of later districts. Beyond them, the flat farmland typical of the Münsterland stretches out in a patchwork of fields and farmsteads.
From the early twentieth century Ahlen was a coal-mining town. The Zeche Westfalen colliery, on the south-eastern side, operated until 2000 and shaped the neighbourhoods around it, including workers' housing laid out in regular rows. On the map, the former mine site and its surroundings remain visible as a separate district with its own grid, set apart from the older centre.
Ahlen also has a place in post-war German history: in 1947 the Christian Democrats adopted the Ahlen Programme here, a manifesto that proposed a social form of economy.
