Akim Oda lies in the Eastern Region of Ghana, within the forest zone that stretches across the south of the country. On a map the town forms a compact network of streets close to the Birim River. Main roads lead out toward neighbouring towns, and the land around is broken into farms, plantations and patches of remaining forest. The pattern is organic rather than planned and follows the terrain.
Akim Oda is the capital of the Birim Central Municipal District and the traditional seat of the Akyem Kotoku, one of the Akyem states. It is a trading and administrative centre for the surrounding farming communities, whose crops include cocoa and other forest-zone produce. The wider Birim valley is also known for its long history of diamond mining.
