Aktobe lies in the steppe of western Kazakhstan, and on a map, the openness of the land is as striking as the city itself. The built-up area forms a broad, fairly compact shape of wide avenues and large blocks, with the Ilek River curving along its edge. Beyond that, roads extend in long straight lines across country with very little to interrupt them.
The city began in 1869 as a Russian military fortification, and its name, often translated as "white hill," refers to the low rise on which that first post stood. Most of what is visible today dates from the twentieth century, when Aktobe grew into a regional industrial centre linked to the resources of the surrounding area.
Newer districts continue to spread outward, and the map shows their even, planned blocks next to the older centre.
