Al Waqf is a town in the Qena governorate of Upper Egypt, lying in the Nile valley. The map shows the defining structure of this part of Egypt: a river bordered by a narrow band of cultivated land, with the desert beginning abruptly on either side. The town sits within that fertile strip, its streets packed close together.
Life here follows the river and the fields, as it has along this stretch of the Nile for thousands of years. Roads and canals run parallel to the water, and smaller lanes connect the town to surrounding villages. Beyond the cultivated land, the map turns almost blank, marking the edge of the desert.
