Allschwil lies in the canton of Basel-Landschaft, directly west of Basel, with the French border running along one side. From above, its built-up area joins seamlessly with the city, while to the south and west it borders forest and farmland, giving the map a clear, irregular edge.
The historic village centre is known for its half-timbered houses in the Sundgau style, rare in this part of Switzerland, and the old core keeps a distinctly rural layout. In recent years, the Bachgraben area has developed as a hub for life sciences and other businesses, adding larger blocks to the town's pattern.
