Altamonte Springs is in Seminole County, just north of Orlando. Like much of central Florida, the map is full of water. Dozens of small, round lakes are spread through the neighbourhoods, and residential streets curve around their shores instead of following a strict grid. Most of the land between the lakes is low, flat and densely planted.
Interstate 4 runs along the eastern side of the city, and State Road 436 cuts across it, lined with shops and offices. Altamonte Mall is one of the largest commercial blocks. Cranes Roost Park, a lake with a walking path around it and a small district of shops and flats, has become a centre for the city.
