Amagi was a city in central Fukuoka Prefecture until 2006, when it merged with neighbouring towns to form the city of Asakura. The name lives on in the Amagi Railway and in everyday use, and the former city centre is still the main urban core of the area. It sits on the northern side of the broad Chikugo River plain, one of Kyushu's most productive farming regions.
From above, the town centre is a compact grid of streets around the station and the older shopping roads, surrounded by an intricate patchwork of rice paddies and irrigation channels. Rivers flow south toward the Chikugo, and to the north the land rises into forested hills. The contrast between flat, finely divided farmland and wooded slopes gives the map a layered texture.
In the hills to the north lies Akizuki, a former castle town often called the little Kyoto of Kyushu for its old streets and autumn leaves. North of the centre, the plain gives way to wooded hills and the valley leading to Akizuki. There the roads start to curve and the settlements thin out.
