Āmol lies in Māzandarān province in northern Iran, where the Haraz River leaves the Alborz mountains and crosses the fertile Caspian plain. The river runs through the city, and on the map it divides Āmol into two halves linked by several bridges. The Caspian shore is a short distance to the north, and rice fields surround the urban area.
Āmol is one of the oldest cities in the region and was once the capital of Tabaristan, the historical name for this part of the Caspian coast. The road south along the Haraz valley is one of the main routes between Tehran and the Caspian, and it passes close to Mount Damavand, Iran's highest peak.
An Āmol map poster shows the dense centre on both banks of the river, the older lanes around the bazaar and traditional quarters, and the newer avenues spreading into the farmland.
