Amos lies in the Abitibi region of western Quebec, on the Harricana River, which flows north toward James Bay. The town was founded in 1914, when the railway reached this part of the province, and it is one of the oldest towns in Abitibi. From above, its streets form a regular grid on both sides of the river, connected by bridges and surrounded by farmland, lakes and boreal forest.
At the centre stands the Cathédrale Sainte-Thérèse-d'Avila, a circular Roman-Byzantine church with a large dome, a striking landmark for a town of this size. Amos is also known for its spring water, which is filtered naturally through an esker, a long glacial ridge of sand and gravel nearby.
