Ancona, the capital of the Marche, takes its name from the Greek word for elbow, and the map shows why. The coastline bends sharply here, and the city wraps around a sheltered natural harbour on the inside of the curve. The old town rises steeply from the quays towards the Guasco hill, where the Cathedral of San Ciriaco overlooks the sea.
Along the harbour sit the Arch of Trajan, built for the emperor who enlarged the port, and the Mole Vanvitelliana, an eighteenth-century pentagonal building on its own artificial island. Beyond the old centre, straighter nineteenth-century streets extend inland, and further south the coast climbs towards the cliffs of Monte Conero.

A five-sided former lazaretto built on an artificial island in the harbour, its pentagon is one of the most recognisable geometric shapes on any Italian waterfront.

The oldest quarter climbs the headland to the Cathedral of San Ciriaco, with winding streets and steps that contrast with the straight avenues further inland.
